62nd Infantry, State Color. The 62nd regiment was primarily recruited in Pittsburgh in July 1861 and was composed of men from Allegheny, Clarion, Armstrong, Jefferson, and Blair counties. Colonel Samuel W. Black, a Mexican War volunteer and Nebraska territorial governor, was given authority to form the 62nd. Senator Edgar Cowan presented the regiment with the state color on December 21, 1861. The 62nd was mustered out of service on July 13, 1864. Two color-bearers, Sergeant Thomas H. Budlong and Sergeant Jacob B. Funk, were both wounded at Gettysburg.
